Presenters Bio: Dr Kathy Harrison is a working Counsellor/Psychotherapist with Vita House, Roscommon. Her work embraces an inclusive, holistic nurturing approach. She has a BA in Holistic Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as a BSc (hons) and MSc in Education and Training and a research PhD; her doctoral thesis is in the psychology of learner motivation, in the pursuit of a holistic philosophy of learning catering for personal and social as well as academic development, and supporting the individual’s sense of self. Kathy is also an associate tutor on the MSc Educational Leadership programme with the School of Education at the University of Leicester. In addition to teaching Guidance Counselling at Master’s level Kathy also lectured for many years at undergraduate and postgraduate levels on research, social science and education. A committed senior research fellow with Dublin City University, she has served for several years as a Director of the Centre for Evaluation, Quality and Inspection at the School of Education Studies, with responsibility for the management of the Centre for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment. Kathy has carried out extensive research focused on the principles of inclusion and social justice, through programmes such as: developing a range of research-informed responses to educational challenges in inclusivity encountered by Irish students; developing a generic standardised initial teacher training programme for the delivery and evaluation of culturally sensitive education, training and assessment; empowering the young by involving them in both their learning, and the assessment of their learning; and examining best practice in addressing issues such as homophobic bullying in second-level schools and the growing prevalence of obesity in today’s society. Prior to lecturing in tertiary education, Kathy was Principal/owner of a private commercial school. She also taught in the Further and Community Education sectors and has considerable experience working with minority and disadvantaged groups. In a rapidly changing society, Kathy’s ethos is embedded in a culturally sensitive and culturally responsive approach, ensuring the individual is always the centre of attention, to optimise her/his capacity to reach full well-being and potential.
