Working with your inner child in therapy to facilitate Psychological healing

Presenter Bio: Maria Neville is a Counsellor and Psychotherapist based in Wexford. For almost 20 years, she has run a private practice working with a diverse range of clients from all walks of life who may come to address a particular issue in their lives or may continue their personal journey with her for many years. Maria adopts a person-centred therapeutic approach using the disciplines of sand-play therapy, CBT, psychotherapy and inner child work among others. She is an official Counsellor for Occupational Health in Wexford Hospital and is the relationship Counsellor and mental and psychological health educator on the Saturday show with Alan McGuire on South East Radio. Maria is a registered teaching practitioner with the Teachers Council Of Ireland and taught adult learners self- development with an emphasis on developing EQ emotional intelligence.

Workshop Outline: Working with the inner child is based in physiology and psychology. It engages the limbic/emotional brain. It is here that we find the physiological impacts of childhood traumas. These impacts are not in the conscious awareness of the client. This part of the brain is activated by triggers in the present world that lead to behaviours that affect their lives negatively. In  inner child work the energy of the childhood trauma is released. The client begins to connect with their authentic self in a deep way; core self-worth increases and shame is uncovered and released. The workshop is experiential, enabling therapists to experience the inner child in themselves. This experience is necessary in order to work in this way with clients.

Training Level: All Levels.

CPD certificates will be emailed to participants after attendance at the Workshop.

Workshop Limited to 20 places. IACP Student places are limited to 5.

Draft regulations to designate the professions of Counsellors and Psychotherapists and to establish a registration board will be ready for submission to the Houses of the Oireachtas for their approval during the present session, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has told the Dail.

The Minister recently concluded a public consultation on  his proposal to regulate counsellors generally under the Health and Social Care Professionals Act 2005.

On foot of the consultation process, He has decided to proceed with the designation of two distinct professions under the Act, that of counsellor and psychotherapist. Each will have its own register under one registration board. This decision has been communicated to the Health and Social Care Professionals Council, the relevant professional bodies and all the respondents to the public consultation process.

Subject to the approval of the Houses, the next step will be the appointment of the 13 members of the registration board, following the submission of suitable candidates for the Minister's consideration, by the Public Appointments Service. The aim is that the registration board will be in a position early in the New Year to begin the task of drafting the various bye-laws to allow it to establish its registers.
