Introducing Couples Therapy CPD Training by Karen Murphy

This workshop is suitable for either therapists who have not yet started with couples or who are in the beginning stages of their couples work. By the end of the workshop they will:
·        Understand how couples therapy differs from individual therapy
·        Be familiar with the main models of couples therapy
·        Have an overview of the framework of the Developmental Model of couples therapy
·        Know the common presentations to couples therapy
·        Understand how differentiation of self and of other is core to being in a healthy relationship
·        Have gained an understanding of how relationships can progress healthily and how relationships can get stuck in hostility or avoidance.
·        Have an insight into the therapists role in working with couples
·        Understand the challenges and rewards that come from working with couples
·        Be familiar with some of the assessment tools used in couples therapy
·        Have reflected on how their own family background will impact them as a couples therapist

11.15am – 1pm Overview of conflict avoidant couples

Self reflection and discussion on what feelings around coming up around working with couples
Common presentations in couples therapy including affairs, communication, infertility, sexual issues etc.
Set up of the room for couples therapy
First session working with a couple

1pm – 2pm Lunch

2pm to 3pm Assessment tools used in working with couples
Role play of the paper exercise assessment tool and discussion
What is it like to be in a session with a couple video
Self reflection and discussion of video

3pm to 3.15pm Break (Tea/coffee)

3.15pm – 4.30pm Feedback from a couple on their couples therapy journey
