Presenter's Bio: 

Heather Harris has over 25 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescents and adults in Boston, MA, USA.  She has provided counselling and art therapy services within schools, residential programs, inpatient and forensic psychiatric hospital units, outpatient counselling services, community-based art therapy programmes and emergency departments.

Her experience also includes over 15 years as adjunct professor for both counselling/psychology and art/expressive therapy graduate programs as well as providing clinical consultation to therapists, clinical supervision to graduate interns and post-graduate licensure candidates.  Heather has facilitated international art therapy projects in Ireland for many years; working with marginalized populations such as the Irish Travellers, Roma, refugees and asylum seekers.  She has established an arts-based, NGO to expand the services she provides, specifically to communities who respond well to non-traditional, intermodal forms of treatment.   


Workshop Outline:  

This training course takes place over 4 consecutive weeks (one hour per week = 4 CPD credits) in March 2024. Participants join each week for one hour (12 – 1 PM) on  7th, 14th, 21st and 28th of March 2024  to discuss specific clinical techniques and behavioural strategies to apply in the school settings with students. A different clinical topic will be introduced each week including: Identifying symptoms of childhood trauma and directives/interventions, Activity/expressive therapy techniques with more resistant/guarded clients.

Developing and leading groups in the school setting and Working with challenging parents/families. Participants in this brown bag lunch series can bring their own experience and case material to these discussions, using our group to assess and identify directives for more challenging cases. This 4 week workshop would especially benefit those already working in school settings in some capacity or who plan to work in a school setting.
