At the moment there is an overwhelming demand for couples therapy and insufficient couples therapists to meet that demand. This course aims to demystify couples therapy for psychotherapists and give a comprehensive overview of how to work with couples and an insight into what that looks like in the therapy
room.

After attending this workshop you will have a more intimate, practical knowledge of couples therapy and how this differs from individual therapy. You will know what options are available for training in couples therapy and what each of these trainings focus on. You will understand the Bader/Pearson Developmental Model of couples therapy in more detail. This will include how relationships develop through various stages and how the work of couples therapy identifies how couples get stuck in being able to move from a symbiotic to differentiated way of interaction. You will have seen examples of the two types of presenting couple, hostile dependant and conflict avoidant and understand how they present in the therapy room. You will also understand how the couples therapist works with these presentations in the therapy room and what the goals of couples therapy are. You will have also self reflected and discussed what personal challenges they may face in working with couples.
After attending the workshop therapists will have a more intimate understanding of working with couples, what the therapy focuses on, how couples therapy works and the challenges and rewards of this. It will help therapists understand what couples therapy involves and help them decide
if they would like to begin working with couples.
