Eoin Stephens is a counsellor, supervisor & trainer who has worked in the area of counselling/psychotherapy and mental health for over 30 years, particularly focusing on issues such as social anxiety & behavioural addictions. He has also worked at a senior level in counselling/psychotherapy education and served on several IACP committees. He was awarded the IACP Carl Berkeley Award in 2010.
These days, his primary focus is on working with autistic adults, and on understanding the problems they face & their specific therapeutic needs. He is himself autistic, having made the discovery in 2012.
Engaging with Neurodivergent clients in the therapy room and;
• Increased awareness around this important area of client diversity.
• Greater familiarity with current thinking about neurodiversity & the implications of the neurodiversity paradigm for therapists.
• Increased knowledge with regard to myths and facts about autism & ADHD (emotions, abilities, masking etc).
• Greater confidence in relation to current terminology in this area.
• A solid grasp of the commonly-held characteristics of autistic people.
• Knowledge of guidelines regarding appropriate communication (and other) adjustments in therapy.
