Angela Carrazza first studied Social Pedagogy in Aachen, Germany, before moving to Ireland in 1997. In 1998 she became a member of the first group of Art Therapists to be trained in Ireland, and qualified in 2001. Since then, she has been working as an Art Therapist in the South Lee Mental Health Services (HSE) in Cork, where she developed the Art Therapy Department in the Acute Mental Health Unit and in the Community Services. Angela has vast experience in working with clients in group and individual therapy, both in the acute and community settings.
The aim is to encourage participants to become more aware of the use of metaphors in everyday life as well as professional conversations, and to learn how metaphors can help a person express and explore distressing feelings by working as a safe container for them. Indeed research suggests that metaphors are the most appropriate (if not the only) way in which to express severe distress. In our profession it is important to familiarise ourselves with ways of integrating metaphors into our work - hearing them and knowing how to respond to them when used by clients in therapy.
A presentation will be given and participants are invited to take part in experimental exercises which will help them explore the use of metaphors.
