Workhop Outline:

It is acknowledged that Autistic people are accessing a wider variety of clinical services within the community and this includes accessing support through therapeutic services such as Psychotherapy.
Cognitive behavioural theory has proven efficacy in treating mild-moderate anxiety and depression. Recent research has also found that adapting Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can have successful outcomes for Autistic people with co-occurring emotional problems (Spain et al 2015). The clinical features and cognitive differences characteristic of Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) mean autistic people require adaptations to standard evidence-based psychological treatments to adequately meet their needs (NICE, 2012).
In order to improve access to treatment and outcomes, therapists must be aware of strategies and how to adapt their practice in line with the needs of autistic people.

The aim of this half day workshop is to explore these adaptations in detail.

The workshop will include:

• Brief background of ASC, exploring the spectrum in the context of Neurodiversity.
• Looking at the presentation of ASC, examining characteristics to develop individual profiles
• Exploring sensory processing and emotional regulation
• Examination of social communication, central coherence and theory of mind – understanding how these characteristics impact upon talk based therapy sessions
• Exploring specific adaptations and strategies to support participation in therapy

CPD Certs will be emailed to participants after attendance at the Workshop

Link and password for Zoom will be sent to all attendees a day or two before to the event
