SRC Network Evening - Working with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Clients in Therapy

Presenters Bios:

Gillian had over 20 years’ experience in the corporate world, mostly in risk management before retraining as a psychotherapist. Her interest in human behaviour, activism and volunteer work made her realise that her heart lay in understanding inclusion and belonging and making an impact in society, especially for subordinate groups. She specialises in LGBTQIA+ issues, gender and sexual relationship diversity, and alternative lifestyles. She runs a therapy centre in Dublin, is a Diversity and Inclusion trainer, is on the board of a humanitarian non-profit and is a corporate consultant on workplace wellness.

Veronica Victor is a second year student of Counselling and Psychotherapy at PCI College. She is currently working at the Under the Rainbow Therapy Centre. She is also the facilitator of TransWaterford Peer Support Group, a member of the Radical Therapist Network, and chair of the TENI Internal Ethics Committee. She works diligently to ensure her practice is anti-racist and anti-oppression. With a history of Women’s Studies and Anthropology she values the complexity of one’s intersectional reality.

Evening Outline:

This introduction session will include understanding language and terminology, the difference between gender and sexuality, the main issues that present with this client group in therapy, self-care and further resourcing on this topic for the therapist. By the end of this interactive discussion we hope that you will have a better understanding of the discrimination, trauma and victimisation of gender non-conforming clients, the issues with transgender medicare, and how you can have a more diverse and inclusive practice with an increased compassion for protected identities. They welcome comments and questions and look forward to seeing you then!
