Supervisors Forum - Attending to the Supervision Relationship


Presenters Bio: 

Dr. Aisling McMahon Is a clinical psychologist, integrative psychotherapist and clinical supervisor, and is also currently training as a group analyst. She works as an Assistant Professor in Dublin City University where she teaches on postgraduate psychotherapy and clinical supervision training programmes with Peter Hawkins, Aisling is co-author of the 5th ed. of Supervision in the Helping Profession (2020). Her specialist interests are clinical supervision and practitioner development from training to retirement.


Outline: 

Sensitively engaging with the supervision relationship is a key part of fostering an optimal environment for effective supervisory work. This workshop will explore four guiding principles for working with the supervisory relationship: offering emotional presence and sensitivity,valuing both vulnerability and competence; offering knowledge and experience with humility; and developing a relationship to foster continued personal and professional growth. Learning/teaching methods that will be used e.g. lectures, workshops, tutorials etc., Speaker credentials to present on the workshop/presentation topic: Dr Aisling has published and presented training workshops on clinial supervision nationally and internationally (for publications, see https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Aisling-Mcmahon-2).

The learning outcomes to be acquired as a result of attending the workshop/presentation

1. Knowledge of theoretical concepts and research findings regarding key aspects of engaging with the supervisory relationship.

2. Enhanced sensitivity to the dynamics of the supervisory relationship, with increased awareness of issues to be considered in managing supervisory tasks and boundaries.
