Liam Cannon is an Accredited Member of IACP since 2007 and Accredited Supervisor since 2013. He began working as Director of Counselling at the Pastoral Centre, Letterkenny in 2010. His role was to manage an adult counselling service and a team of five counsellors.
During his time at the Pastoral Centre the counselling service has grown and developed, increasing the team of counsellors, psychotherapists and play therapists to eighteen. The Centre supports people in rural areas in availing of the counselling services locally.
In 2015 Liam identified a gap in counselling for children and young people. Children and Adolescents counselling service was created and since then almost seven thousand counselling sessions have been delivered to children and adolescents alone.
Recognising the importance of community counselling supports, Liam has created a model of community counselling, developed governance and has led out on establishing services which cover most of Donegal. In addition, he has supported his counselling team by providing in-house group supervision and all counsellors are now paid for their work. Liam has supported communities in exploring ways in which to fund their services. This has proved successful, and it has also attracted attention from state bodies such as Tusla and the HSE in providing additional funds. The current services cover from Inishowen all the way to Dungloe and Aranmore Island.
