Carl Berkeley Memorial Award 2024

Audrey Flanagan, Apr 2024

In 2018 Audrey began her student hours at The Finglas Counselling service, a service that was operated from one room in a family resource centre. At the time the service was being run by a dwindling group who had started it twenty years previously when they saw that counselling was badly needed in the area. From the start, Audrey had an affinity with the service as she was from the local area and had seen the difficulties growing up. When approached, she agreed to take over the running of the service. If she had not agreed, the service may not have continued.

The Finglas Counselling service has been a vital mental health resource for many years in a disadvantaged area and has allowed people to access support who would not have had the financial resources to do so otherwise. In addition to that, the service is where many student counsellors have had the opportunity to learn and grow.

The service has been able to go out into the community and support parents of children with additional needs in schools and in partnership with other agencies. The service provides talks on key areas such as grief, bereavement, suicide and men’s health to organisations in need. None of this would have been possible without Audrey’s lead. Many people over the years have come back to the service and told stories of how it made such a difference to their lives, and thanks to Audrey many more in the future will be able to say the same.
