In Person - NIRC Current research & applied methodology in clinical practice with trauma
Presenter's Bio:
Dr. Breda Friel is Course Director for Postgraduate and master’s programmes and CPD Short Courses (Level M) in Community Youth Work at Ulster University. Her research and publications are in the areas of suicide prevention policy in Ireland, Autism and mental health, the relationship in practice, trauma management, Crisis, and Covid-19. Specialising in trauma debriefing and critical incident responses, She is an accredited therapist and clinical supervisor with IACP and BACP. She works with statutory and C&V agencies in managing resources and support following critical events. She is currently researching the unfolding narrative and practice themes emerging from COVID-19 and the traumatic impact of the defective block’s crisis. Breda is a founding member of Insight Inishowen, a suicide prevention community organisation in Donegal.
Event Outline:
Therapeutic practice requires knowledge and skills in addressing a range psychological trauma and adversity themes. Presentations can include developmental, childhood and historical trauma, natural disasters, long-term or acute crisis events, human migration in response to global conflict, persecution, terrorism and uncertainty.
Nationally and internationally recent years has witnessed improved understanding of trauma—its neurobiological underpinnings, diverse presentations, and long-term impact. Historical and current adversity narratives require practitioners to manage complex trauma presentations, with the development of innovative interventions, methodologies and evidence-based models aimed toward the support of improved pathways and outcomes for clients.
This workshop aims to reflect upon and enhance knowledge and research, skills and applied methodologies in clinical practice with trauma. Content will include:
· Examine current research, PTSD and trauma theory.
· Reflect on positive psychology, and strength-based approaches in trauma practice.
· Discuss applied methodologies including organisational themes, somatic, cognitive, and relational approaches.
· Support ethical and practice review, interactive case discussion, aimed at bridging theory and practice.
