Online Supervisors Forum - Burnout Prevention in Supervision
Presenter's Bio:
Linda is an IACP Accredited Counsellor, Psychotherapist, Supervisor and Lecturer. Having trained originally in Northside Counselling Services in 2003 and following this with a DCU Post-Grad in 2006, she trained as a supervisor in 2018. During the Global Pandemic Lockdowns, she was invited by companies to facilitate employee workshops on all things Mental Health and Wellbeing and through this and her work with both supervisees and trainee therapists as clients, she realised that Burnout was becoming a common theme.
She is now passionate about equipping professionals to identify the signs and develop the skills in supporting people who are on the verge of burnout so as to prevent it from escalating further. Life is very busy now and expectations from others as well as ourselves can risk escalating our vulnerability to Burnout. Educating ourselves about it, what to look out for and steps we can take will help prevent this from escalating.
Event Outline:
Supervisors have a real opportunity to be able to spot the initial signs of Burnout in our Supervisees and it is very important that we equip ourselves with the awareness, knowledge and skills in supporting our supervisees in preventing any potential burnout from escalating.
Self-care is an often forgotten element of the IACP Code of Ethics and Practice that we sign up to and the reason it is there is because there is a risk to our vulnerable clients if they are attending a therapist that is on the verge of Burnout. The WHO describes the 3 main signs of Burnout as Reduced Professional Efficacy, Exhaustion and Cynicism and it is this last sign that could be most damaging in the therapy space that is meant to be safe and non-judgemental. This workshop will have some slides but it will also provide the opportunity for attendees to reflect on the concept of Burnout and how it can appear in Supervision as well as take the chance to practice the language and skills we might use when addressing Burnout concerns. Models of Supervision will also be integrated into exploring when this issue comes up.
