Galway Rape Crisis Centre is delivering a Specialised Training Programme for qualified and pre-accredited counsellors and psychotherapists.

Specialist Training in Working with Trauma, Sexual Violence & Abuse

The Galway Rape Crisis Centre has been supporting survivors of sexual violence for over 40 years. This specialist training is developed for qualified and pre accredited counsellors who wish to strengthen their knowledge, understanding and skills for working in the complex area of sexual violence.

This training provides a trauma informed framework for working therapeutically with survivors of the trauma of child and adult sexual violence.

It deepens the understanding of the traumatic impact of child and adult sexual violence and develops an enhanced capacity to work effectively and safely with survivors of trauma of sexual violence.

Learning Outcomes:

· Ability to apply trauma informed principles to the therapeutic work with survivors of sexual violence.

· Have a deeper understanding of the psychological, emotional, and physical impact of trauma.

· Evaluate the modalities and approaches that facilitate working with survivors of sexual trauma and abuse.

· Develop an understanding of the neurobiology and physiology underlying trauma responses.

· Assess and reflect on unconscious dynamics within the therapeutic relationship with particular reference to the trauma of sexual violence.

· Recognise the importance of client resourcing, empowerment and resilience building in working with trauma.

· Explore therapist self-care and self-management in relation to working with trauma.

This training will be delivered over eight weekends spread from September 2026 – March 2027. Four weekends will be delivered online and four in person. See attached details of weekends involved.
